The Importance of Marketing-Made Simple

As a small business owner, you may not have the capital just yet to spend a lot of money on advertising your services, which is completely understandable. However, marketing is so much more than just throwing money in different directions hoping that something brings in customers. So why is marketing so important? The answer is very simple…you’re business needs customers. Your customers need to know you exist. How will you get customers to know you exist? Marketing!

I’ve come across many business owners who believe that word of mouth will get their business where they want it to be and that’s how they plan on marketing themselves. I’ve also met business owners who use outdated forms of marketing such as newspaper ads and then get frustrated that “marketing doesn’t work". In the year of 2018, business owners need to get serious about their marketing. There are many ways to reach your target audience these days and word of mouth or print advertising are no longer the best solutions.

Marketing is more than just spreading the word about your business or handing out flyers. It’s about targeting both geographically and demographically. It’s about knowing what will draw a customer’s attention or what your competition is doing. It’s about research and follow through and it does take time and money to market a business properly. It takes a lot of time planning, researching and a valuable skill set to market a business these day because times have changed. Everything is digital. And while we may yearn for the days where the Newspaper gave everyone their news each day of the week and it was a trusted source of where to go for what you need, it simply isn’t so anymore. My generation and generations after me look to Google, Facebook and even Instagram for services. While some mailings may work for certain occasions, a majority of our searching starts on a tablet or other electronic device.

It’s imperative to keep this in mind while making your business plan. You have to allocate some monies for marketing. Whether you are doing it yourself or hiring an individual to do it for you, you need to know what digital (and some print) costs and what’s involved in getting your message out there.

Unfortunately the results of marketing do not happen over night, this is where the frustration comes in, especially if you are a small business owner trying to take it on by yourself. My suggestion is to get someone, a family member or friend or consultant, who will be able to get the marketing ball rolling for you or to do it all for you. In the end, it will be worth it.
